Submission Guidelines
A. INITIAL MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Two paper copies of the manuscript and an abstract of 100 words or less are required. (Do not send an electronic copy at this point.) A list of figures and two complete sets of illustrations (good quality photocopies are fine) are also required. All submitted material should be double-spaced, and pages should be numbered. Please submit a separate cover sheet with your name, e-mail address, home and institutional addresses, and a phone number. In order to ensure blind readings from the editorial board and outside readers, the author's name should not appear anywhere in the abstract or the manuscript, including the notes.
All submissions are reviewed by an editorial board during the fall semester. This process is usually completed within four months. Papers that advance beyond the initial review are sent to outside readers to confirm that they represent original contributions to the existing scholarship. Papers that meet this standard are selected for publication. Although the identity of outside readers remains confidential, the comments they make are forwarded to the authors.
B. SUBMISSION OF ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPTS
The comments of the outside reader are often not very detailed, and represent only the first step in an editing process that is likely to require multiple revisions. The editors will suggest additional changes to content, format, and style. The first revised version of the manuscript should include the author's name on a separate line following the title as well as the author’s institutional affiliation at the end of the main text. Additional revisions may be necessary. The entire editing and production process usually takes about twelve months.
Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author must provide a disc that includes electronic copies of the abstract, manuscript, full bibliography, figure captions, and a biographical statement (fifty words or less), each in a separate file. Digital images to be used as the basis for published reproductions may not be available when the other initial set of electronic files is submitted. However, authors must provide a disc with digital images once they have been compiled.
Authors are responsible for supplying images needed for illustrations and obtaining permissions to publish the images. This process can take a long time, and should begin as soon as the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Images may be submitted in the form of 8x10 photographs or digital images of at least 600 dpi. Copies of the publishing permissions as well as captions are also required. Do not send original documentation of publishing permissions through the mail. Please fax forms to the appropriate editor at 732.932.1261 or send photocopies to the mailing address below:
